Mexican Time provides the highest level of customer service for a car rental business in Merida, hands down.

With a background in service based businesses in Australia, the management at Mexican Time know that good customer service is paramount. Customer service for us doesn’t just mean smiling when you pay us for the rental car. Customer service to us means going above and beyond throughout your rental term with us. We have helped our customers with a wide range of issues, mostly having nothing to do with their vehicle they rented from us. We provide the highest level of customer service because we understand that most of our valued clients are new to Mexico, and sometimes find themselves in a situation they don’t know how to navigate.

No credit card or deposit required

Hiring a car in a new country can sometimes be a daunting task. In the vast majority of cases, rental car companies require you to book using only a credit card, and paying a substantial deposit. For some, this is not an issue. However there are a lot of well documented instances where car rental companies have overcharged their customers through the credit card they used to book the car, or even help the deposit for months after the car was returned. For most people, they cannot afford to have a car company hold potentially thousands of dollars for months on end, as they need that money to live.

At Mexican Time, we understand this dilemma when it comes to renting a car in Merida, and offer our customers the ability to rent a car without a credit card or deposit. Knowing that a lot of people feel uncomfortable with using a credit card (and there are a lot of people who don’t use or believe in them), we feel its only fair to allow those who don’t wish to use their credit card rent a car from us in Merida.

The price you are quoted is the price you pay, period.

There are a lot of stories of people who go on holiday to Merida, and rent a car from someone at the airport (or elsewhere in the city). They pay what they think is a good price, only to later find out that the insurance is more expensive that the car rental price itself.

When you see a price on our website, or are provided a quote, the price we give you is the price you pay. That’s it. We do this because we know our customers want a simple solution when on their holiday here in Merida.

Off season prices all year round

Virtually all car rental companies in Merida will increase their prices during high season, simply because they like to price gouge ‘’gringos’’ because they are on holiday. We here at Mexican Time find this in very bad taste and a poor business practice, and therefore offer the same price all year round. Christmas Day, Easter, or just a Tuesday in April, the price of the car you are renting remains the same.

A local car rental business you can trust

Without taking a credit card or deposit, we put our money where our mouth is when it comes to being a trustworthy car rental business in Merida. We rely heavily on repeat business from regular visitors and expats who live in Merida long term, and we understand there are some shady operators in Merida (not just in the car rental business). For this reason, its of paramount importance for us to be a trusted local brand.

We provide delivery options for those requiring their rental car to be delivered to them

We provide delivery options for those who wish to have their rental car delivered to them in Merida. It can be daunting for newcomers to try and navigate a city like ours, so we figured we should offer the delivery service. For rentals 1 week or longer the delivery option is free, however for shorter terms we provide the service for anywhere in metropolitan Merida for 200 pesos for deliver, and 200 pesos for picking up the car, and 500 pesos for longer distances such as Progresso and Chelem.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process for renting a car in Merida through Mexican Time?

Renting a car from us is easy! We require a copy of a valid license and passport, and the dates you wish to rent from us. Your license can be from virtually anywhere in the world, so you do not require an international license.

What happens if I get in an accident in one of your rental cars?

Getting in a car accident can be a very scary experience. If this happens, try and remain calm, and call us right away. The rules in Merida when getting a car accident is to leave the car exactly where it is, and wait for the police to arrive. The majority of police here in Merida do not speak English, so if you are asked questions and don’t understand the language, just call us and pass the phone to the officers. We will also contact the insurance company and come down to the accident location and be with you throughout the process. The insurance policy on all of our cars includes 3rd party liability, medical care for all occupants in the vehicle and much more, so you can be rest assured you will not be left with an enormous bill. However if the accident is determined by the police to be your fault, we will work with you to ensure that costs and other damages are minimized.

Is insurance included in the price that I am quoted for my rental car?

Yes. All prices quoted by us or advertised on our website and other platforms is inclusive of insurance.

Some differences you should know when driving in Mexico compared to western countries

If you are planning to rent a car or drive in Mexico, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Driving laws and regulations in Mexico may be different from those in the USA and other western countries. For example, in Mexico, you must have liability insurance to drive legally.

  • Many roads in Mexico may not be in the best condition, so be prepared for bumpy rides and uneven surfaces. Additionally, some roads may not be well lit at night.

  • Road signs and directions may be in Spanish, so it’s a good idea to brush up on some basic Spanish phrases related to driving and navigation.

  • In Mexico, drivers tend to be more aggressive and less patient than in the USA. Be prepared for faster speeds, sudden lane changes, and more frequent horn honking.

  • Parking can be a challenge in some parts of Mexico, especially in major cities. Make sure you understand the parking rules and regulations in the areas you plan to visit.

  • It's important to carry your passport and driver’s license with you at all times while driving in Mexico, as well as the necessary documents for the rental car.

  • Gas stations in Mexico are often full-service, so don't be surprised if an attendant approaches your car to offer to fill up the tank.

  • If you plan to cross the border into Mexico with a rental car, make sure you check with the rental car company first, as there may be additional fees or restrictions.

  • Finally, be sure to drive defensively and stay alert, especially in unfamiliar areas or in heavy traffic. Pay attention to road signs and signals, and take extra precautions when driving at night.
